Seven education and care staff spent the day at Holly Bank Farm yesterday learning about the day to day care of sheep, pigs, horses and chickens.  Most were completely inexperienced around livestock and wanted to learn how to look after them, and how to be safe around animals.  After an introduction to health and safety, hygiene and welfare, the trainees were taken on a tour of the farm, helped to drench and load sheep into a trailer and watched a demonstration of foot trimming.   After a home grown lunch (well nearly, we haven't got into salmon farming yet!) the afternoon was spent  with the horses and chickens. Many of the trainees were very nervous of handling horses so Monte and Nero played their part in the day and were led round the paddock and had their feet picked out.  Monte gained a few more fan club members and Nero is fast developing a fan club all of his own!  Bantam catching was great fun and the trainees learned how to treat common parasites and handle chickens the correct way to avoid causing distress or injury to the birds.   Feedback from the participants was extremely positive and they all said that they had learned lots and felt more confident handling the animals, particularly the horses.

We were very excited to take delivery of our new Longhorn cow, Dunstall Gypsy and her heifer calf, Dunstall Lucinda.  Gypsy is in calf again so we hope to start our very own herd of Longhorn cattle!

We are delighted to be asked to supply an INSET training day for staff at a local residential school in Basic Animal Husbandry.  Staff will learn about the day to day care of sheep, pigs, horses and chickens.  I will also be teaching equine skills and riding to students at the school and they will shortly be taking delivery of four beautiful shearling ewes to add to their collection of goats, ducks and pigs.
